HYPNOTHERAPY:
To Quit Smoking

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS? Hypnosis is a method used to totally relax your body and your conscious mind, which in turn allows your subconscious to be more open and accessible. In this relaxed state, your subconscious will accept positive suggestions and visualizations, such as to quit smoking.

Smoking, like any habit, has 2 components: its cause (the why) and its pattern (the when and where). Let’s look closer at both of these.

The cause or reason why you smoke is probably one or more of the following:

  • You smoke to nurture or reward yourself.
  • You smoke to relieve stress or provide a break in your activity.
  • You smoke because you find social situations uncomfortable.
  • You smoke to control your weight.

Now, each of the above reasons has a positive function. It’s just that the habit established to meet that need is one which ultimately destroys rather than supports. The good news is that you can meet these needs while employing new, more constructive behaviors. We will work together to develop a concrete set of new options that have a positive function without the drawbacks of smoking.

The second component of smoking is the pattern of the habit––the when and where you smoke. Again, we develop new behavioral options for you to choose in these situations. All of these new behaviors (for the why, when and where of smoking) are visualized during hypnosis. You reinforce these new, positive behaviors through your at-home playing of the audio tapes of our sessions.

In summary, we “reprogram” your subconscious, in order for you to:

  • Reduce stress in your life.
  • Build self-confidence in achieving your goal.
  • Reinforce your own reasons for becoming a nonsmoker.
  • Perceive cigarettes as being unappealing and distasteful.
  • Perceive yourself as a healthy, energetic person.
  • See yourself as a nonsmoker.
  • Incorporate into your life new patterns of behavior in regard to the reasons, times, and places you smoke.

And, because you are harnessing the power of your subconscious to make these positive changes, it’s a lot easier than trying to use your conscious mind’s will power!
